The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund’s Efforts to stop injustices against Immigrants

The Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is a major benefactor of Arizona-based activist groups that are committed to protecting the rights of minorities. The foundation was established about a decade ago by Jim and Michael.

They are both well-established journalists, and they own top magazines that are known as Phoenix New Times and the Village Voice Media. In October 2007, the two journalists were illegally arrested by Joe Arpaio who is the former sheriff of Maricopa County.

This detention violated the Fifth Amendment rights of the two reporters, and they filled a lawsuit against the county. The case was heard by a federal judge who ruled that the journalists be paid $3.75 million as settlement fees. Michael and Jim have always advocated for the rights of immigrants, and this motivated them to establish the fund.

One of the organizations that benefit from the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund is the Arizona DREAM Act Coalition. The group was formed a while ago, and it is determined to protect the rights of young immigrants who would like to be employed in the United States legally. The organization has been working to make sure that all Latin youths are not oppressed and are offered a chance to achieve their dreams. Read more: Michael Larcey | Crunchbase

The activist group has been fighting against the 2006 law that has forced undocumented immigrant students to pay high tuition fees for them to attend any learning institution including community colleges. T

he law makes all immigrant students ineligible for merit-based publicly sponsored scholarships. The oppression made the young people start the DREAM group to protect themselves. They have been fighting all forms of ethnic injustices that face the Latin youths.

The Arizona-division of the American Civil Liberties Union is also a beneficiary of the Larkin and Lacey Frontera Fund. The ACLU of Arizona was established in 1959 and has managed to fights against many unconstitutional laws that affect minorities. In 1960, it filed a lawsuit that successfully overturned legislation that had made multi-racial marriages illegal in Arizona.

The organization was nationally appreciated due to its involvement in the Ernesto Miranda case. It managed to exonerate the Latino laborer, and the case led to the creation of the silence warning that is given by law enforcement officer to suspects in their custody. The ACLU of Arizona was on the frontline in defending Jim Larking and Michael Lacey after they were detained by the sheriff. The accomplishments of the group have enabled it to have significant influence in Arizona.

Another great achievement of the ACLU is successfully abolishing the “Papers Please” SB 1070 law through a petition. The law oppressed immigrants since it allowed sheriffs and the police to enforce immigration laws.

ACLU has also been making sure that the freedom of expression of day workers is not violated. It is now opposing an executive order that was given by the Arizona governor to stop issuing driving licenses to the immigrants who legally live in the state. The group is also determined to reduce the number of deportation cases.
