In today’s world of constant connection, artists like The Chainsmokers take advantage of the opportunity to connect with their fans and listeners on a daily basis. Most famous musicians just pay marketing firms to handle their social media accounts, but not Alex Pall and Drew Taggart. They seem to prefer the input they receive when taking note of the positive affirmations, and even constructive criticism. They’ve both stated before that it only helps them strive for their goal that much harder.
Coming form the EDM and DJ backgrounds, Pall and Taggart understand the relationship between the artist and the dance floor. One may get lucky by creating something on their own that is later related to be those that hear it, but why stop there when the goal is to create music that all can appreciate? This is why Pall states that he pays attention to what people are saying on sites like Reddit. He even says he actively interacts with Reddit users to see what they can do to ensure their fans like the direction the group is taking.
Of course, true artistry is not conformed and confined to what others think about it only, but when you think of the digital platform as a sort of dance floor in itself, it begins to make sense as to why they have chosen to take note of what listeners are saying. In rare form, The Chainsmokers are even known to ask what listeners would like for them to do in the future, as well as clear up any misconceptions as to the artistic direction and motivation behind existing releases.
The Chainsmokers were recently named on The Forbes 100 Top DJ’s of 2018, securing the number 31 spot this year. Given their unorthodox record release scheduling, this is even more impressive. They have chosen to release their tracks as singles, or mini EP’s, with the idea of releasing a full length album with all the tracks when enough musical material has been generated. It makes a lot of sense as to why they chose this direction, for working on 13 tracks takes time. If you wait to release each one at the point where the final ones are finished, the earlier ones may not be as relevant on the dance floor.
